Summary:
The Director of Patient Access (DPA) is a strategic field-based access leader responsible for driving patient access to therapy through proactive education, stakeholder partnership, and cross-functional collaboration. The DPA serves as the local access expert, working within a collaborative Local Action Team (LAT) framework to remove reimbursement barriers, support authorization success, and optimize the overall patient experience across the continuum of care.
This role partners closely with Healthcare Providers (HCPs), infusion centers, hospital pharmacy teams, billing and coding professionals, specialty pharmacies, care coordinators and internal stakeholders to ensure seamless access aligned with company portfolio strategy and evolving payer policies. The DPA supports both pre-launch and post-launch initiatives, adapting access strategies to therapeutic area dynamics, coverage policies, and organizational priorities.
The territory for this role is SC, NC, MS, AL, GA, FL & PR. Qualified candidates must live in the territory.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Access Strategy & Stakeholder Education
- Develop and maintain strategic relationships with HCPs, infusion centers (HOPD, home infusion, alternate sites of care), hospital pharmacy, revenue cycle teams, specialty pharmacies, and care coordinators.
- Provide payer-specific education on coverage criteria, prior authorization (PA), appeals, coding, billing, procurement, and reimbursement processes.
- Deliver HCP education on patient support programs and HUB services to streamline enrollment and reduce time to therapy
- Support account readiness for new product launches, including cell and gene therapies when applicable.
Local Action Team (LAT) Collaboration
- Partner cross-functionally with Patient Engagement Leads (PELs), HUB Case Managers, Market Access, Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs), Patient Advocacy, Area Business Managers (ABMs), and Key Account Managers (KAMs).
- Share field insights on payer trends, policy changes, and access challenges to inform broader access strategy.
- Align on account-specific action plans to proactively mitigate access barriers.
- Support site-of-care optimization strategies consistent with payer requirements and organizational goals.
Reimbursement & Operational Excellence
- Educate stakeholders on:
- Commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid coverage policies
- Buy & Bill and pharmacy benefit pathways
- Coding (HCPCS, J-codes, NDC), claims submission, and documentation requirements
- Appeal best practices and denial mitigation strategies
- Provide account-level issue resolution by collaborating with HUB and internal teams to address reimbursement challenges.
- Monitor and communicate local access landscape dynamics, including policy updates and reimbursement shifts.
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure all interactions adhere to company legal, regulatory, and compliance standards.
- Maintain documentation and reporting consistent with field access governance requirements.
- Demonstrate strong ethical judgment in navigating complex reimbursement environments.
Experience & Knowledge
- Deep knowledge of:
- Payer authorization and appeal processes
- Commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid insurance structures
- Medical benefit vs. pharmacy benefit reimbursement
- Buy & Bill, specialty pharmacy, and infusion site-of-care dynamics
- Experience supporting hospital outpatient departments (HOPD), home infusion, and alternative infusion sites.
- Demonstrated success in pharmaceutical field access, reimbursement, or market access roles.
- Launch experience preferred, particularly in rare disease, specialty, or cell/gene therapy environments.
- Experience working within integrated delivery networks (IDNs) and large health systems preferred.

Education & Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree or equivalent advanced education preferred.
- Minimum 10 years pharmaceutical industry experience with payer coverage and reimbursement.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience supporting healthcare authorization processes and HUB collaboration.
- Experience with medical benefit products, specialty pharmacy models, and rare disease infusion therapies required.

The annualized target salary range for this role is $195,000,000 to $215,000; actual salaries will vary and may be above or below this range depending on several factors, including experience, education, training, location, and merit.
